Members Wish List | Autism PDD

Improved search capability.

Specifically, I would like to be able to search on multiple criteria.  For example, I often see someone post a question that has been on the board and I've already given a lengthy response to before, so I'd like to unearth my old post and repost it.  For example, I know I once posted a long description of what C was like at 3, and "what was your child like at 3" or some variation is a recurring topic.

Today, if I search on 3 years old, I get a zillion hits.  If I search on posts only by Kristys I get everthing I ever posted.   What I really want to do is be able to search for the phrase 3 years old but ONLY in posts where author is kristys.

First, be aware, NO PROMISES are being made, but what we would like to know is:

If you could see changes, improvements, things added or removed from the message board... What would be on your wish list? And PLEASE lets be realistic!

For example; members have expressed a desire for a private place to "talk" with each other.

There have been requests for a place for adults on the spectrum to talk.

These are just some examples. Maybe if we can put together a wish list we can run some good ideas by Ernest and see some of them implemented. After all this is a board for us and without us, there wouldn't be a board, so if there are suggestions of ideas, please... do share. Lets discuss them and brainstorm them and tweek them and really come up with some ideas that will make this place ROCK!

Thanks!

Firefly39373.6100578704I love the chatroom idea. It would be great to be able to chat with live with everyone here.momof139373.7227083333YES!! Private chat, easier search and easier way to put pics on. That would ROCK!!!I like the private chat room idea. I also like the idea of easier searching...

A private chat room that only members of a certain level can access, provided chat times will be moderated.

Karrie

I second Kristys suggestion.  The current search feature can be frustrating.

I like this idea Serge, but I think we would need ernest's consent before it gets branded specific to this board.  We don't want to set up something like that with his board's name on it that he doesn't explicitly endorse.

You could, of course, always set something up like this yourself!

I will leave it to you to explain to the members how to use IRC chat!

Chat features: This would take a software update so this is nothing I can do at this time.  ernest would need to update the software and create this.  Also, someone mentioned moderating...there is no way that we can ensure moderation 24/7 in a chat room.  This is one of the perils of having such.  Rules would need to be discussed and perhaps times when it can be open with or without moderation.

Improved Search: This too requires a software update for obvious reasons.

Easier pic upload: The forum software has the capability to handle direct upload of pictures, but this does not mean that it would be easier.  Usually, forums place size restrictions on picture uploads.  This means that you would have to get the dimensions and actual file size correct before you even upload it!  That would make it tougher on you (Imagine trying to make sure that your file is a maximum of 75 Kb and 90x50 pixels...yeah...get it?)  Hotlinking is allowed (which a lot of forums do not allow).  This is actually the easiest way to show your photos.  It also allows you to show them at the size you like and does not place an undue balance/storage load on the servers as if you were to directly upload them they would then have to be stored on the server and therefore take up storage space that may not be there...and slow down the forum even more.  ernest would need to make that decision before such a thing would be allowed.

I hope this helps.  I realize this is a wish list, but I am simply addressing what would need to happen for it to bear fruit!  I hope that we can get the updates that are needed. What about a Real-time IRC channel, I could set up a Java-chat on Chatautism and a channel there if any of you would like
I will leave it to you to explain to the members how to use IRC chat!
It's basicly the Net Equivalent to CB Radio, people have Nicknames, called Nicks and they talk in places called "Channels" on "Servers" I have a  channel on the Server called "Espernet" that anyone from here can feel free to join after downloading a program called "mIRC" which is an IRC client, or a program used to access IRC.  when you fill out the details the first time the program starts up, type into the textbox (without the quotes) "/server irc.esper.net" which will take you to the "Server" itself.  after you are completely logged in, type (Without the Quotes) "/join #whatnot" and You'll arrive there

"Chat times" moderated.  I never said 24/7.....I realize that would be impossible. Pleople would just have to go in at their own risk when it was not specific chat times. But that way if we did get the updates and got a chat room and a specific time was set to chat then someone could moderate it that way people would feel safer to be in there.

(sticking tongue out and giving rasberry!)  lol

Karrie

ok So IF a chat room was able and allowed to be made. Rather than worry about it being moderated, what if it could be where you have to have lets say at least 25 or 50 posts before you could go in there? Maybe less. We usually spot Spammers and Trolls pretty quickly and it helps when members use the report button. Is there that much of a need to moderate daily members? Other than heated debates and flaming others Maybe there could be an ignore feature? Moderation might be tough. Even the mods and admins might not be able to comit to watching the chat for shift hours. You raise a good point and I agreeI like things the way they are, That chat room might not be a bad idea but, I like the idea of everybody in one place. If I had a wish for this it would be that there would be a separate post just for people with questions especially newbies that need answers. I think the Moderators or anyone else that has been here for a while should never let a question unanswered or at least some advice. Noone questions should be left unanswered or unotied. I know out of all the parents on this board there is at least one of us that could answer or help somebody with there question or dilema. I think sometimes we tend to pass a post by because we've been there done that already , I know I have. Laceyone39377.3071412037
Newbie,
Hi, I am new here and was wondering if you had a list of users by state.  More specifically a way to find local doctors that come recommended.   These can be developmental pediatricians, DAN ect.

when I first saw the topic Members Wish List
I was thinking some kind dream christmas list. lol
ok, Kristy is right. I get lost looking for my questions
How about a place to put technical questions. And maybe an area for siblings to gather?
this seems to have gotten lost in the shuffle... so i am bumping it.. i would like to know what the mods/admin think of my idea.

Wendy I think a forum for siblings to discuss issues would be a great idea, but I'm a little concerned about the age of children posting and information given. Also concerned if they happen onto the parents area and read issues that are adult  discussions - not that they can't do that already even as a guest.

With Tech questions what exactly are you referring to? Is it something that could be done by a PM? The other issues is the number of forums we would have for different post issues and too many could be really messy looking, and confusing for members and alot of patrolling and moving for mods/admins.

Ideas?

I didn't really mean to imply a section for children to gather, but older teens and adult siblings of autistics. i know it would help many many people. My tech questions idea, i recently had a tech problem and there was no list of mods to contact. so maybe just an area to post tech questions or concerns. Maybe a list of who to contact on the board would be good too.Newbie,

I have not read all posts, so sorry if it is a repeat.

I think it is a good idea to be able to email the all posts on a topic to a friend or..

I think it would be great if there was a way to go specifically to your last unread post in the topic you select.  I do lots of scrolling trying to figure where I left off.

Also, is it possible to have a flag for the topics that you have read already.  I read things then a few days later I am not sure if I read them already or not.
That's a  a good Idea, I can ask my programming buddy if that's possible in forumscript like PHP or any of ther other board languages.   I actually would prefer the chat to be available for those who have posted much more than 25 times. I would think in order to chat, you would have to be a "senior member". But, that's just my opinion!
Dang , then I wouldn't be able to join the channel ;; no fair
How about a place to put technical questions. And maybe an area for siblings to gather? That's unfair, I want to talk to people like Jessica, Payne's mom and Tzoya, they're fun to talk to i didn't mean locking the sibs in one area, but just have an area available for them to have discussions in. Ahh, got it :) I hope it works out, but like I said, any of you can jump onto my channel when youfeel like it, chances are, I'll be on

Serge,  I went to your channel last night,  you were not there!!!!

Oh dear, do comeback, I was probably gaming there were 2 people there,  One asked if I was the lady that Final mentioned????  I wasnt sure if i was in the right place and i can't remember the peoples names,  Maybe one was Cecieli or something????Oh ceceil, I know who that is, I've known her forever.  do come back.  I hope Tzoya shows up someday, then I'll throw an E-party I'm a little paranoid about irc chat,  it doesn't seem very secure and i worry about viruses.   How much of a risk is there????Not as much as people say, just don't accept what are called DCC sends or Direct Client Chat Sending maybe an area to swap gf/cf recipes that are easy to make....

This has been done by a few members already in the Autism Diets forum

Autism Diets
Discuss different diets for autism

Possibly we could dedicate a sticky in that forum to the exchange of recipies only

Edited because nature of post was not relevant to the subject being discussed in this thread. This member started a new topic for discussion in a different forum.

Wow! What a great Place. I am a VERY new member (about an hour)

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Wishlist request: I would really love to see STATE, CITY, COUNTY added as an option for Location under our screen names instead of just the country.  So much of what we discuss regarding services depends on the state and county and it would be nice to share local resources with others in our own areas.

Camusa will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe to do this, it would have to come from the site owner. For now, you can use the State / Country Resources forum to share and exchange resources for your general or local area. You could also put something in your signature like... wanting to share local resources for city, state / county, state / state or whatever. - Just a thought.
I have found TONS of useful information, a wide range of awesome people and can say that the best help to a newbie (or maybe anyone) would be if the resources by state topic could have subtopics so if I want to look at resources in Kansas for example I could go to that topic then to the subtopic Kansas and see everything posted about that area. From the number of posts I saw about people relocating it seems that might be helpful to others as well.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

That was the intention when the forum was created, but it took on its own new twist.

That's my wish :)

Personally, I find it disturbing that posts are locked and not moved, as they used to be. I completely understand (as a former Mod) how time-consuming moving can be and I don't think the system has to go back to the old way. However, I would personally appreciate it if a DIFFERENT symbol were used to indicate that the post was closed because it was put in the wrong section or it was a double post. The locked symbol has come to mean danger, not only on this site but other sites.  I think it is helpful to leave up posts that were locked because they became too hot -- for members to view as examples of what to avoid. And those posts need to have a locked symbol on them. However, for posts that are just in the wrong place, perhaps a different symbol can be created so that our board is not peppered with a symbol that causes concern.  Or, at the very least, have the Mod who locks the thread post a brief reason why.  I sometimes see that and it's helpful to me.  This does not have to be elaborate -- DOUBLE POST or WRONG THREAD -- PLEASE REPOST ON ___________ would be plenty.
1.  Some posts are locked and others are moved.  One does not preculde the other.
Ones that are in the wrong section are moved to the correct one.
Ones that are contentious are locked down.
Therefore...I don't understand your initial statement at all.

2.  We do not have any tools onthis site...as a former mod you might actually know this.  We do not have the controls to do much here much less import symbols.  If you know a way, please feel free to share it with us.

3.  When a post is edited out there is a reason given.  This is a rule of thumb.  "Edited due to solicitation, content, double-posting" etc.  Therefore, again, I do not understand your complaint.

EDITED DUE TO DOUBLE POSTING

Firefly39537.7280092593Oh, sweet! A wish list!!!

ahem....

I wish we had the FREAKING EDIT BUTTON back!!!!

I was here long before we had active moderation and, while having active mods has been good in many ways, I think the fear of making a mistake in posting has added a Big Brother feel to this site.  I don't like the "search" feature which doesn't work all of the time.
I you were asking me I would have installed the whole thing on a different platform and I would have used different bulletin board with tree (threaded) view.

I personally would go with Linux/MyBB or Linux/IP.Board.

If you ever decide to go that way I can help you with that, since I am doing it for living. However importing the old posts could be tricky.

my posts have vanished without a reason given and my wish is to have that reason given

i'm not complaining and trying to make moderators suffer, i wish to decrease my suffering

and increase understanding whether mine or other's posts-greater appearance of fairness

The general "take it or leave it" attitude makes me sad !

This thread is a members wishlist thread. Please stick to the topic. Further off topic posts will be edited or deleted.

Thanks!

I have sent numerous non-American friends and parents here to find information.  Perhaps a special welcome up front for them would be  a good idea.  In the long run, it would be nice to see another language show up in a link for this great website.Ideas that might have a REALISTIC POSSIBILITY The State / Country Section should be organized by state or region.  It might be worth having separate boards within the "state" forum for each region.

There is usually no way to tell what region somone is posting about without opening their post.  If this is impractical, then maybe we could at least encourage people to put the name of the state in their post.I hope this posting is not too late.

I would like to suggest a thread (separate from the hangout section) for
humorous anecdotes. ASD kids (and adults) do and say very funny things
and I think a special section for that would be great. One major tool for all
of us is a sense of humor.

Thanks A section for parents of autistic adults would be heaven, there are so few resources out there for adults with ASD and their families that having a place to garther and share info would be a god send.

I am closing this thread because it was started a little more then 2 years ago. The board owner has not been in contact with any mods/Admins and appears to have abandoned the board. Because of this, the mods/admins hands are tied and unable to implement many of the wishlist ideas. Please feel free to contact a mod or admin if you feel you have an idea that could be useful for this board.

Thank You.
